Problem Statement

The main goal of the snow sport senior design team is to develop a ski form that will deliver consistent performance in all snow conditions. The team will also develop a handbook and tooling to be used by future design teams that are engaged in ski development.

Project Summary

The initial phase of the project will require the establishment of design boundaries. This will be accomplished by choosing two existing commercial ski forms to represent the extreme parameters. The surface area of each boundary form will be determined, as will the side cut radius, width and length. When the mountain snow pack has reached sufficient depth to permit opening the 2005–2006 ski season, the design team will take the prototypes out to local ski resorts and conduct on snow testing with volunteer participants who will then fill out customer need surveys. The design team will then compile the needs and develop the final product dimensions that will represent the first iteration of the optimized all mountain ski form. The design team will then fabricate the optimized form with the goal of repeating the on snow testing to see how well the ski performs.
